TMc|Eye on Flickr – the ultimate Arcata yearbook.

This is my 50th article with the Arcata Eye.  Fifty articles in 52 weeks.  Through all the laughs, cries, veiled threats, flat tires, snarky editor commentary and a permanent branding as a sourpuss that rags on anyone that doesn’t cite Wilco as an influence, I remain here, happier than ever that I have such an opportunity to exercise discourse on our thriving and varied music scene.

The Bay District should discard this plan, regroup and utilize the strong minds and clear visions of our community members, and other coastal communities around the nation, to develop a business plan that will protect the important Humboldt Bay ecology and further solidify and expand our unique regional economy.

Hoover is not doing the community of Arcata any service with his inflammatory, biased and unethical reporting. His journalistic credibility and integrity are questionable at best. Perhaps some sort of independent audit or examination by the SPJ or another concerned entity (Humboldt State journalism students maybe?) would shed some light on Hoover’s reporting and hold him accountable for his unethical behavior.

I’m wondering if today’s Americans would have the strong will and dedication those in the 1920-’30s did when America was in need of strong dedication, understanding, strength and willingness of sacrifice that it took to get us through the Great Depression.

Frankly, I like going to the recycling center. I like any place where people from my community are doing some kind of work together. It’s a little dab of social glue. I have very vocally supported the Arcata Community Recycling Center over the years, despite the contrary views of my good friend Michael Machi. So what will happen to that institution? Where will that leave those of us who seek  “self-redemption?" How many jobs will this new plan add or eliminate? What about the reusables store, where one can buy the cheapest coaxial cable in town?

I’m sorry if the tone of this seems judgmental. I’ve been reading your letters for months now and I just had to say something. Take a step back and look at what you have achieved already. Compared to most communities, you have it made. Join together and seek common ground, and remember, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

The citizens of the Third District missed a rare opportunity to move Paul Pitino, a person who is experienced, reasonable, capable, dedicated and kind, from the City Council to the county supervisor position, without him getting there via the “political machine,” using a campaign based on ideals of campaign finance reform.

Scott Burns, deputy director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy was in Humboldt County Tuesday, July 15. Above, left to right: Community Development Director Larry Oetker; Art Whorley, ONDCP policy analyst; and Tommy LaNier, director National Marijuana and Public Lands Initiative, and Burns. Regarding enforcement, Burns seemed to offer a mixed message. While unyielding in asserting that federal law holds marijuana illegal under all circumstances and trumps all state and local medical cannabis laws, Burns nonetheless advised Arcatans to “defer 100 percent good judgment of the people who have been elected and appointed” while motioning to those present in the APD conference room. But most of them are working on guidelines under which medical marijuana may be safely cultivated and dispensed. The Burns interview airs on KHSU 90.5 FM this Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. after the Home Page, and will stream online at khsu.org.

The impending guidelines run counter to entreaties made by some dispensary operators to the Planco at last week’s meeting. They asked that the commission give City approval to illegal purchases of cannabis from home gardens managed by 215 patients – this despite repeated statements by commissioners and staff that the thrust of the new dispensary regs would be to sever any connection to residential grows.

ARCATA – An Arcata cannabis dispensary has filed a petition in Humboldt County Superior Court over the Planning Commission’s decision to prohibit commercial cultivation of medical marijuana downtown.  The petition names the City of Arcata, City Council and Planning Commission as respondents. In papers filed Tuesday, July 1, Humboldt Medical Supply (HMS) asks that the Planco’s decision, later upheld by the City Council, be stayed so that it may cultivate cannabis at its new facility at 855 Eighth Street next to the Arcata Post Office.

The sole Arcata search warrant was served at 1658 Virginia Way, where FBI agents and at least one postal inspector dismantled what appeared to be a modest grow operation. A Friends of the Forest group did exist in the mid-i990s, using volunteers equipped with a belt pack which contained a small folding saw, first aid kit and brick-sized cellular phone. The workshop also included new information that suggests the local housing market is cooling. McKinleyville realtor Heidi Varshock was part of a panel that analyzed the status of the county’s housing situation. She said the market has changed dramatically, saying that there were only 530 home sale listings in June of 2007, and this year there are 945. Many of the listings got on the market through foreclosures, Varshock said.
